The University of Wisconsin–Madison has awarded biochemistry professor Vatsan Raman with the Vilas Associate honor for 2025-2026 in recognition of his contributions to systems and synthetic biology.

The Vilas Associates Competition recognizes outstanding new and ongoing research at the University. Awarded by the office of the vice chancellor for research, it provides up to two-ninths summer salary support and $25,000 in flexible research funds over two years.

“I am honored to receive the Vilas Associate award and I thank the Vilas Foundation for this generous support and recognition,” Raman said. “This award is truly meaningful, as it enables us to ask bigger, bolder questions and push the boundaries of science and technology.”

Since joining the university in 2015, Raman has explored biomolecular and cellular systems at the protein-wide and genome-wide scales, integrating biochemistry, computation, and engineering. His work aims to advance scientific understanding and technological applications in these fields.

Raman’s laboratory uses systems and synthetic biology to study and design biomolecular systems, focusing on allosteric proteins, synthetic bacteriophages, and high-throughput functional assays. He is also affiliated with the Departments of Bacteriology and Chemical & Biological Engineering, the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, and the Center for Genome Science Innovation.

Raman earned a B.S. from Baroda University, India, an M.S. from Missouri University of Science and Technology, a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle, and completed postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School’s Wyss Institute.
