Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal's latest historical drama, Chhaava, has made a strong impact at the box office, earning approximately $4 million on its opening day, Feb. 14. This marks the highest opening of Kaushal's career and the biggest Hindi film debut of the year.
Expressing his gratitude, Kaushal shared on Instagram, "Aapke pyaar ne #Chhaava ko sachmuch Zinda kar diya!!! All your messages, calls… all the videos you all are sharing of your experience of watching CHHAAVA… I’m seeing it all… taking it all in. Thank you for all your love… Grateful to each and every one of you for celebrating the glory of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj."
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Maddock Films, Chhaava depicts the life of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji and the second ruler of the Maratha Empire.
With Kaushal in the titular role, the film also features Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, Ashutosh Rana as Sarsenapati Hambirao Mohite, and Divya Dutta as Soyarabai. Adapted from Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel Chhava, the film’s score and soundtrack are composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.
Kaushal underwent extensive training, including stick fighting and horse riding, to authentically portray the legendary warrior. Despite sustaining an injury during filming, he committed to achieving a physique of 231 pounds to accurately represent Sambhaji Maharaj.
The film’s strong performance was bolstered by advance bookings exceeding $600,000 prior to release.
