Virginia has sent its first shipment of U.S.-grown turkey to India, marking a milestone in U.S.-India trade. This achievement follows a recent trade agreement, supported by U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) and others, that lowered tariffs on American poultry, making it more affordable for Indian consumers. Previously, high tariffs had restricted U.S. turkey exports to India.
Sen. Warner, who co-chairs the Senate India Caucus, praised this development as a “huge step forward” for U.S.-India trade and Virginia’s poultry industry.
The National Turkey Federation and Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative (VPGC) also celebrated this milestone, highlighting the potential for growth and benefits to local farmers.
Virginia, a top turkey-producing state, generated 14.5 million turkeys in 2021 and relies heavily on the poultry industry, which contributes US$5.8 billion directly to the state’s economy. With increased access to the Indian market, Virginia producers expect to expand and serve more consumers abroad.
In time for India’s holiday season, Virginia turkeys are anticipated to be featured in Indian hotels and restaurants, presenting new opportunities for U.S. exporters.
