World Jain Organization Canada wins advocacy battle on swastika usage

The issue of distinguishing the ancient religious swastika from the Nazi hate symbol has been an ongoing concern for Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist communities in Canada.

The World Jain Organization Canada (WJO Canada) on Mar.5 announced what they call ‘a major advocacy success’ in its efforts to ‘reclaim’ the word swastika. The organization expressed gratitude to Peel Police for making changes to its website, replacing the term "swastika" with "Nazi hate symbol" in references to hate-related incidents.

In a statement titled ‘Reclaim swastika word’, WJO Canada said, "We are proud to announce success of our advocacy work at Peel Police in reclaiming the word swastika. We have worked with Peel Police and could convince them not to use the word swastika in the context of hate.”
