Eric Garcetti, the United States Ambassador to India, recently visited Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) facility in Jaipur.
During his visit to the organization, the ambassador learned about the invention of the Jaipur Foot, also known as Jaipur Leg. It is a rubber-based prosthetic leg for people with below-knee amputations. Based on the polycentric concept, it is designed using the four-bar linkage geometry.
Ambassador Garcetti appreciated the fact that Jaipur Foot is a high-quality and low-cost prosthetic that has helped thousands of people walk. He also expressed amazement in knowing that the treatment is free of cost and that BMVSS has provided Jaipur Foot and other aids to over 35,000 persons in a year.
BMVSS has provided over two million artificial limbs, calipers, and other aids and appliances, free of charge, to disabled people in India and countries across the world, according to a statement by the organization.
Devendra Raj Mehta, founder and chief patron of the BMVSS, said that Jaipur foot is currently present in 42 countries and is being provided free to handicapped persons.
The knee is made from oil-impregnated nylon and consists of an upper and lower body block, two side linkages, and a mid linkage, held together by four steel bolts. The body blocks have segments for socket and pylon attachment.
Jaipur foot was designed by Stanford University, USA, in collaboration with BMVSS. It was also praised by Time magazine as one of the world’s 50 best inventions in 2009.
Apart from providing a wide range of services for the disabled, BMVSS is also focused on research and development. It has forged agreements with Stanford University, MIT, ISRO, and IIT-Jodhpur to collaborate on research projects.
The organization has also partnered with companies like Jain Irrigation, Pinnacle Industries, Polymedicure, and Universal Medicap to develop and improve its aids and appliances.
