In light of India's recent overtaking of China as the world's most populous country, CGTN America, the international branch of China Central Television, has premiered "India becomes world's most populous nation" to illustrate the significance of this event.
The topic was explored in "The Heat" with Anand Naidoo, CGTN America's premier daily current affairs show. Experts interviewed on the show agreed that the transition would bring the country both opportunities and challenges.
According to Times of India journalist Chidanand Rajghatta, a larger population can have a significant positive economic impact if India can invest in high-quality healthcare and education. However, due to the rapid development of technology, India must focus less on agriculture and reevaluate its youth employment strategies, she maintained.
Lecturer at Cornell University Alaka Basu spoke about population density problems in India. Some states are experiencing a severe shortage of workers, while other states have a significant youth unemployment problem. She elaborated that a balanced supply and demand within India would foster prosperity and reduce inequality.
Demographer and data scientist Stephen J. Shaw predicted that India's wealth and consumption would increase over the next two decades. However, he also claimed that the growth of India's population has actually slowed and will start declining in the next 30 years, a fact that is often lost in international headlines.
