Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his historic visit to Kuwait—the first by an Indian leader in 43 years—praised the Indian diaspora, calling them a "Mini Hindustan" at a community event on Dec. 21.

Addressing the ‘Hala Modi’ community reception shortly after his arrival, Modi said, "I’ve just arrived in Kuwait 2-2.5 hours ago, and from the moment I set foot here, I’ve felt an extraordinary sense of warmth and belonging. You all have come from various states of India, but seeing you here feels like a 'Mini Hindustan' has gathered before me."

The two-day visit, undertaken at the invitation of the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, aims to deepen the bilateral relationship between the two nations. Ahead of the trip, the Ministry of External Affairs noted the importance of the visit, highlighting Kuwait as home to approximately one million Indians, the largest expatriate community in the country.

"The Indian community is the largest expatriate community in Kuwait. The visit will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the multifaceted ties between India and Kuwait," the ministry stated.

During the interaction, Modi highlighted the Indian diaspora’s role in enriching Kuwait's landscape. "You have filled Kuwait's canvas with the colours of Indian skills and the mixed essence of India's talent, technology, and tradition," he said, commending their contributions to sectors ranging from healthcare to education and beyond.

During his trip, the Prime Minister also met retired Indian Foreign Service officer Mangal Sain Handa, who is based in Kuwait. At 101 years old, Handa is a distinguished member of the diaspora.

The meeting followed a social media appeal from Handa’s granddaughter, Shreya Juneja, who requested the Prime Minister to meet her grandfather. Responding to the request on X (formerly Twitter), Modi expressed his eagerness to meet the centenarian, stating, "I look forward to meeting @MangalSainHanda Ji in Kuwait today."

The visit, scheduled for December 21-22, is expected to further bolster India-Kuwait ties, focusing on enhancing trade, cultural exchanges, and cooperation across multiple sectors.
