Stamford’s Ferguson Library hosted a Diwali celebration on Nov. 17, organized by the Connecticut Chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO-CT) and the Stamford Mayor’s Multicultural Council.
The event featured cultural performances, traditional art, and Indian cuisine, drawing residents from across the city to celebrate the Festival of Lights.
The program began with opening remarks from GOPIO-CT executive vice president Mahesh Jhangiani, who noted the significance of Diwali as a symbol of unity and shared values. Library official Yelena Klompus and Stamford Mayor’s Multicultural Council representative Ana Gallegos also addressed attendees, highlighting the importance of such events in fostering community connections.

Over 75 children participated in performances that included Indian classical, folk, and Bollywood dances. Attendees also had the opportunity to experience cultural traditions such as Mehendi, where intricate henna designs were applied, and sample Indian snacks like samosas.
Organizers said the event aimed to raise awareness about Indian culture and create a space for cultural exchange. "This event is not just a celebration but an opportunity for learning and building bridges,” said one of the coordinators.
