FIA Chicago marks 16 years of service

Four members of the organization's leadership team are vying for public office in the April elections.

The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago chapter marked 16 years of dedicated community service and cultural advocacy by reaffirming its commitment to strengthening ties between the United States and India. 

Since its inception, FIA Chicago has played a pivotal role in uniting the Indian diaspora in Chicagoland and the Midwest, fostering community engagement. Representing over 600,000 Asian Indians, the organization remains a driving force in building strong connections between the United States and India. 

Under the leadership of founder president Sunil Shah, FIA Chicago has expanded  its membership by 324 and organized nine major community initiatives, including Republic Day, Health Fairs, Holi Festival, International Yoga Day, and student scholarships. 

The organization provides a vital platform for emerging leaders, offering opportunities to serve in roles such as president, vice president, treasurer, and cultural secretary. FIA Chicago has also made significant strides in women’s empowerment, with female membership rising by 151 percent and three women—Vinita Gulabani, Pratibha Jairath, and Anu Malhotra—leading the organization in recent years.

Our commitment to cultural preservation, community service, and professional empowerment continues to drive us forward. We remain dedicated to fostering connections, supporting emerging leaders, and creating new opportunities for businesses to thrive. Together, we will shape a brighter, more united future for our community,” Anu Malhotra, current president, said. 

As FIA Chicago looks ahead, its legacy continues through members who are stepping into public service. Four members are running for public office in the upcoming April 1 elections, they include Nag Jaiswal (Naperville Council), Altaf Bukhari (Maine Township Trustee), Sameer Gupta (Carpentersville Trustee), and Ram Tyagi (Aurora Library Board Trustee).

“Fifteen years of resilience and service have built a platform that empowers us all. This election is about securing our voice let’s unite and vote,” said Sunil Shah, FIA founder and president said calling on the community to support these candidates.  

“Our success is a collective triumph of inclusivity and support. FIA creates leaders, and now it’s time to back them," said Hitesh Gandhi, FIA past president.
