The Times Higher Education (THE) has announced its World Reputation Rankings 2025, with four Indian universities making the list, though all have seen a decline from last year.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, which was ranked 101-125 in 2023, has slipped to the 201-300 range. IIT Delhi and IIT Madras have also dropped to the same band, down from their previous rankings of 151-175 and 176-200, respectively. Meanwhile, IIT Bombay, which was ranked 151-175 last year, has fallen out of the list entirely.

A new entrant, Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), a private deemed university based in Bhubaneswar, has secured a place in the 201-300 range, marking its debut in the global rankings.

Globally, Harvard University has retained its top spot for the 14th consecutive year, while the University of Oxford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have tied for second place. The top 10 is dominated by U.S. institutions, with China’s Tsinghua University and Japan’s University of Tokyo securing eighth and 10th place, respectively.

The 2025 rankings feature 300 universities from 38 countries, with new entrants from Malaysia and Poland. The list is based on academic prestige, evaluated through six key indicators, including research and teaching reputation, determined by surveys from experienced scholars.

Despite Indian universities maintaining their presence, the drop in rankings underscores the need for stronger academic research, faculty outreach, and global collaborations to improve future standings.
