Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on April 8 announced the formation of a new internal task force dedicated to restoring public trust in the U.S. Intelligence Community

The initiative, known as the Director’s Initiatives Group (DIG), will also implement a series of executive directives issued by President Donald Trump aimed at increasing transparency, ending politicization, and holding government officials accountable.

DIG’s formation aligns with President Trump’s executive order titled Ending the Weaponization of the Federal Government, which seeks to address perceived abuses within federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

According to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the DIG has already begun work on tasks outlined in the directives. These include investigating alleged misuse of intelligence agencies, reviewing documents for potential declassification, addressing unauthorized disclosures, and identifying inefficiencies and wasteful spending across the Intelligence Community.

“In order to rebuild trust in the Intelligence Community and execute the tasks required by President Trump’s intelligence-related Executive Orders, I established the Director’s Initiatives Group to bring about transparency and accountability across the IC,” Gabbard said in an official statement.

“We are already identifying wasteful spending in real time, streamlining outdated processes, reviewing documents for declassification, and leading ongoing efforts to root out abuses of power and politicization,” she added.

Gabbard's reforms

The DIG is currently reviewing classified materials related to several high-profile matters, including the origins of COVID-19, the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation, so-called “Havana Syndrome” cases (formally known as Anomalous Health Incidents), and claims of domestic surveillance and censorship under the previous administration.

In line with the President’s directives, the group has also authorized the declassification and release of files concerning the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To reinforce security protocols, DNI Gabbard has revoked security clearances for individuals no longer in active national security roles, including former President Joe Biden, former Representative Liz Cheney, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Gabbard has also taken internal action against misconduct, including disciplining NSA employees involved in sexually explicit chatrooms and launching investigations into unauthorized leaks of classified material.

“President Trump promised the American people maximum transparency and accountability,” Gabbard said. “We are committed to executing the President’s vision and focusing the Intelligence Community on its core mission: ensuring our security by providing the President and policymakers with timely, apolitical, objective, relevant intelligence to inform their decision-making.”
