Georgia becomes Battleground State
In this letter, Girish Modi explains how recent developments have turned Georgia a usually Republican state into a battleground state in the upcoming elections.
Dear editor,
Georgia has always been a Red State during presidential elections meaning most of the times the votes are cast in favor of Republican presidential candidates, except when Jimmy Carter became president in 1968 election.
Joe Biden had won Georgia in 2020 by 11,800 votes prompting Trump allegations of “stealing the election”. Trump was hoping to flip Georgia to a Red State if Biden had remained as Democratic candidate. Unfortunately, Biden decided to withdraw and VP Kamala Harris became the candidate for the Democratic party. From the very first day of her announcement, Kamala has invigorated the campaign by raising $300 in less than a month, which more than three times Trump has raised.
These developments have turned Georgia into a battleground State crucial for becoming next president. As a result, the citizens of Georgia and especially residents of Atlanta have seen campaigns by both parties at every few days interval, which news channels report and rerun day and night.
What is worse is that TV channels bombard with 3-minute long negative ads by both candidates, which are run at five minute intervals day and night and will continue to do so until the election day.
No wonder this type of campaigning will turn off many undecided voters.
