Georgia Tech pays tribute to emeritus professor Malhotra

Malhotra served at Georgia Tech for 30 years until 2009, having held the highest faculty rank in the University System of Georgia.

The Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business is mourning the loss of regents professor emeritus Naresh Malhotra, who passed away on January 7, 2025, after a brief battle with cancer. 

In a statement, the college honored his lasting contributions to academia, research, and mentorship, highlighting his profound impact on students and scholars worldwide.

Malhotra was a distinguished scholar in marketing, statistical science, and social psychology, serving on Georgia Tech’s faculty from 1979 to 2009 before continuing as professor emeritus until his passing. His extensive contributions to the field earned him recognition among the top two percent of most cited researchers worldwide. 

As the editor-in-chief of the Review of Marketing Research and the author of over 140 scholarly publications, he shaped the landscape of modern marketing research.

“Naresh was truly a giant in the field,” said John McIntyre, executive director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at Georgia Tech. “His scholarly contributions to marketing and related disciplines are so numerous as to defy enumeration. His impact on scholars, colleagues, students and friends was felt throughout his life and will continue. We will miss him greatly.”

“He was a dedicated professional, made numerous contributions to the marketing discipline, and was loved by students,” said Ajay Kohli, Gary T. and Elizabeth R. Jones chair and regents professor of marketing at Georgia Tech. “He will be sorely missed.”  

Malhotra received numerous awards for his contributions to marketing research, education, and service such as the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Prestige Institute of Management, Gwalior, India, and the CUTCO/Vector Distinguished Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. 

He was also honored as Best Professor in Marketing Management (2011) at the Asia Best B-School Awards. In recognition of his scholarly impact, he was selected as a Marketing Legend (2010). 

Malhotra held several key leadership positions in the academic and research community. He served as the chairman of the Emerging Markets Conference Board and was the lead program co-chair for its annual conferences. Additionally, he was chairman of the Academy of Marketing Science Foundation (1996-1998) and president of the Academy of Marketing Science (1994-1996). 

Born and raised in India, Malhotra moved to the U.S. for his Ph.D. He developed a deep passion for evangelism and converted to Christianity in 1978 becoming an ordained minister of the Gospel, a member and Deacon, at First Baptist Church, Atlanta, and president of Global Evangelistic Ministries, Inc. 

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Veena Malhotra, their daughter Ruth, and son Paul.
