Germany pips Canada as popular destination among Indian students : upGrad
Only 9.3 percent of students from a sample of 25,000 respondents chose Canada as a dream destination.

Indian students pursuing higher education in international countries no longer prefer Canada. According to upGrad's annual Study Abroad Trends Report, Indian students are now moving to Germany.
The report gathered insights from over 25,000 aspirants across tier-1 Indian cities (42.8 percent), and tier-2, tier-3 cities (57.2 percent). Only 9.3 percent of respondents chose Canada as a dream destination, according to the survey.
The ongoing diplomatic standoff between India and Canada, housing crisis, and tightened student visa rules, including proof of US$15,247 (approx.) in available funds are among some of the issues that have contributed to the sharp decline.
Countries in the European Union have witnessed an increased demand (48.8 percent) among Indian students, followed by the US (27.6 percent). As per official data, there were 2,68,923 Indian students in the US in 2022-2023, reaching an all-time high.
After the EU and the US, the UK remained the third most popular destination among Indian students from Tier 1, 2, and 3 cities. Overall 142,848 sponsored study visas were granted to Indian students in 2022-2023.
Germany has been gaining significantly in terms of popularity amongst those seeking higher education in international universities. An October 2023 report highlighted that India had displaced China as Germany’s top source market for students.
As per the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the country received more international students than ever, precisely 367,578, in the winter semester of 2022-2023. The numbers were 5 percent up compared to 2021-2022, marking the fifth consecutive year of growth.
The number of Indian students in Germany in 2023 was 42,578. In terms of popularity among Indian students in 2024, Germany (32.6 percent), Ireland (3.9 percent), France (3.3 percent), and other European nations (9 percent) surpassed Canada.
