Glenn Maxwell pulled off an unbelievable win for Australia at the ODI World Cup match against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai by scoring a sensational double century. His 201 off just 128 balls proved to be the game-changing knock that rescued Australia from 91/ 7 to win the match by 3 wickets and 19 balls left.
Fans and cricketing stars all over the world were left awestruck by Maxwell as he single-handedly managed to put runs on the board despite battling severe cramps in both his legs and also falling to the ground due to a back spasm during his time on the field.
The impressive knock made Maxwell the first non-opener in men's ODIs to make a double hundred, the first batter from Australia to score a men's ODI double hundred and only the third batter to score a double hundred after Martin Guptill (237*) and Chris Gayle (215) in men's Cricket World Cup history. A number of other records were also set by the Australian courtesy of his brilliant knock.
"We talked about coming off, trying to get some work into my back and trying to loosen up my legs a little bit. Jonesy (Australia physio Nick Jones) said it would be really hard to come back out down the stairs after that so probably made the job a little bit more simple and then we came up with let's just stay at the same end for as long as we can until you sort of feel like you can at least walk at the other end or if there's an easy single here and there,” Maxwell said revealing the details after the match.
Speaking about the significance of the win he said, “I think after the first two games we were pretty close to written off by most people and to be able to get string six wins together at the right time and we didn't have our best stuff tonight against a pretty spirited opposition so to be in the semis is great.”
Glenn Maxwell's heroic innings will be remembered as one of the most unforgettable moments in the history of the Cricket World Cup, etching his name in the annals of the sport as a true maestro.
Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins, wrote on X, “A lot of credit should go to Maxi, he played his role beautifully.” Sachin Tendulkar also took to X to react to the innings and wrote, “...From Max pressure to Max performance! This has been the best ODI knock I’ve seen in my life. ”
