Gov. Newsom reappoints Hemesh Patel to California osteopathic medical board
The Indian American physician was also a member of the Human Relations Committee for the City of Huntington Beach from 2020 to 2023.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the reappointment of Dr. Hemesh Patel to the Osteopathic Medical Board of California, which oversees the safe practice of medicine by osteopathic physicians and surgeons in the state.
Patel has served on the board since 2020 and works as a family physician and obesity medicine specialist at the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, a position he has held since 2011. He also served as an expert reviewer on the board from 2015 to 2019.
The Indian American physician was also a member of the Human Relations Committee for the City of Huntington Beach from 2020 to 2023. His other roles include serving on the Education and Ethics Committees for the Federation of State Medical Boards and as vice chair of the Accreditation Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
Additionally, Patel volunteers as an assistant professor of clinical medicine at UCI Health and a global health volunteer with Project HOPE. He has also been a yoga instructor and a crisis counselor.
Patel holds a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, an MBA from UCLA, and a Master’s in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from UCLA.
The reappointment does not require Senate confirmation and the position offers compensation of $100 per diem.Patel is a Democrat.
