A 23-year-old man from Surat, Gujarat has reportedly died in the Russia-Ukraine border. The deceased was identified as  Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya according to various media reports.

Mangukiya had gone to Russia in December 2023 and was subsequently attached with the Russian Army. Reports claim that he had enlisted through an online advertisement and reached Moscow from Chennai. More details about his death remain unclear.

It was previously reported that several Indian nationals have joined the Russian army as assistants or helpers. The Indian government suggested Indians serving in the Russian army were seeking assistance for discharge and emphasized that several Indians have already been discharged.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated its awareness of the issue and stated that it has strongly raised the matter with the relevant Russian authorities in both Moscow and New Delhi.

"We have seen some inaccurate reports in the media regarding Indians with the Russian army seeking help for discharge," MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement. "Each and every such case brought to the attention of the Indian Embassy in Moscow has been strongly taken up with the Russian authorities and those brought to the attention of the Ministry have been taken up with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi. Several Indians have already been discharged as a result," he added.

"We remain committed, as a matter of top priority, to actively pursuing with the Russian authorities all the relevant cases of Indian nationals for an early discharge from the Russian army," MEA added. The statement did not address the media reports concerning the death of 23-year-old from Surat.
