HAF-SewaDiwali event commemorates Diwali in Sacramento
Attendees learned about the 250 lbs. of food that Chinmaya Mission and HAF national program director Easan Katir donated to Woodlands during the event.

The Hindu American Foundation and SewaDiwali of Greater Sacramento County jointly hosted Diwali celebrations at the Jain Temple of Greater Sacramento. The event also highlighted the accomplishments of the Hindu American community.
Lisa Kaplan of the Sacramento City Council and Jill Gayaldo of the Rocklin City Council presented Sangeetha Shankar, the regional director of HAF California, with proclamations honoring Hindu American Awareness and Appreciation Month (HAAAM) and Diwali.
Dignitaries who graced the event included California State Senator Angelique Ashby and Folsom Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD) board member Christopher Clark, who acknowledged and appreciated the diversity and significance of the Hindu American communities.
Speaking on the occasion, Shankar expressed, “I was honoured to receive the HAAAM and Diwali proclamations from Sacramento and Rocklin city councils and to participate in the closing ceremony of SewaDiwali. Both showcase the contributions and diversity brought in by our Sacramento wide Hindu American communities while also highlighting the need to address raising Hinduphobia.”
During the event, attendees heard about the 250 lbs. of food that were donated to Woodlands by Chinmaya Mission and HAF national program director Easan Katir. The volunteers of SewaDiwali presented the accomplishments of their food donation drives, noting that over 9500 pounds of food, along with multiple bags of winter clothing, were distributed in the Sacramento area.
Fourth & Hope, Yuba-Sutter Food Bank, Hands of Hope, Rancho Cordova Food Locker, Sacramento Loaves & Fishes, and Sacramento Kindness Campaign were the recipient organizations.
