Hardish Khinda charged for contractor fraud in Canada

Khinda committed fraud of over CAD 5,000 (US $3,738) and could face a maximum jail sentence of 14 years.

A 42-year-old Indian-origin man has been charged in a series of alleged renovation frauds in Mississauga and Brampton in the Canadian province of Ontario.

According to a recent update issued by Peel Regional Police, Hardish Khinda was arrested by investigators from Norval, Ontario in 2023 and charged with defrauding the public.

Khinda, aka Sunny, of Weaver Home Improvement and North Side Renovations, signed five renovation contracts and collected deposits totaling CAD $37,000 (approx. US $27,666) between September 2021 and February 2023. For every contract, Khinda collected a deposit and promised services. However, he failed to provide the said service or return the deposit.

He appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton toward the end of December 2023. Considering Khinda committed fraud of over CAD 5,000 (US $3,738), he could face a maximum jail sentence of 14 years.

Investigators believe that more victims exist in the case and are encouraging them to contact police. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fraud Bureau at (905) 453–2121, ext. 3335. The police department further called on the public to be “meticulous in vetting their contractors by asking for personal referrals, checking online reviews, and verifying their credentials.”
