Former Seattle City Council member and prominent Indian-American political activist Kshama Sawant said both Presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are “anti worker and warmongering”.

Speaking to New India Abroad outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Sawant was clear in her criticism of both major political parties in the U.S., particularly the Biden administration who she believes has allowed the genocide in Gaza to continue.

“Whether it's Harris or Trump what you're getting is a continuation of the slaughter of the Palestinian people. What you're getting is a continuation of the cost of living crisis and the climate catastrophe that working people both in the United States and abroad face.”

"We are here in solidarity with the anti-war movement," she declared, emphasizing the importance of the movement becoming independent from both Democrats and Republicans. "No Harris, no Trump," she said, calling for an end to U.S. military funding for Israel.

Sawant, who co-founded the organization Workers Strike Back, described the group's mission as fighting against the "genocidal war on Gaza" and advocating for a $25 minimum wage across the United States. They are also fighting for quality housing, free healthcare, and good union jobs for all.

She pointed to what she described as a significant shift in American public opinion, noting that a majority of American working people now oppose the war in Gaza. "You can see the chasm between what the majority of the working people in the United States want and what we have on offer from both the Democrats and Republicans," Sawant stated.

Sawant also highlighted the lack of leadership on the left becausemost labor leaders have endorsed President Biden and Vice President Harris. She stressed the necessity of building a new party for working people, independent of the two major parties. "We need a new party for working people," she urged, arguing that the path forward requires breaking free from both major parties.

She concluded by talking about the need for immediate action and endorsed Jill Stein, an independent anti-war, pro-worker candidate for president. "Every vote for Jill Stein is a vote that will convey the message to ordinary working people and young people that yes, it's possible to build a new party for working people," she said, underlining the importance of maximizing support for Stein's campaign.

In addition to the rally in Chicago, Sawant announced that Workers Strike Back would be organizing further rallies and meetings across the country, including in Washington state and Michigan, to build momentum for their cause and to advocate for a powerful international anti-war movement.
