Harris Unqualified to be Nominee
In this letter, Girish Modi expresses why he thinks Kamala Harris is not the right candidate for President.
Dear editor,
Kamala Harris, whose mother was from South India and father was from Jamaica, was lucky to become Biden’s running mate for the 2020 election. It was a strategic move by Biden upon advice of his confidants, since she represented blacks as well as being woman – a first in the history of American presidential elections.
After Biden’s expected withdrawal as Democratic Party’s nomination under pressure from lawmakers, Kamala became the heir apparent. Many prominent Democrats moved quickly to throw their support behind Harris, as well as the political action committee representing the Congressional Black Caucus. She raised $49 millions within one day.
Other party leaders, however, like former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised Biden’s decision to step out of the race but stopped short of endorsing Harris. It’s unclear if she will face any challengers for the nomination ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.
However, Kamala is not qualified to become president of most powerful nation in the world, because she lacks foreign policy experience. As a vice-president Kamala may have attended many meetings in the White House on critical issues, but she was not involved the decision making process. Her other jobs included tie breaking vote in the Senate in order to pass Biden’s signature achievements such as Inflation Reduction Act and support pro-choice movement after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade landmark case.
There are many other prominent Democrats who are better qualified and more experienced than Kamala. Among them are California Governor Newsom, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly and Michigan Governor Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. These individuals may prefer to be the party’s main candidate than Kamala’s running mate.
The Democratic Party’s convention to be held on August 19 will be very interesting political event; because it will be an open convention, which means delegates are free to vote for whomever they like. People will also compare Kamala’s qualifications with those of Hillary Clinton’s, who was narrowly defeated by Trump in 2016.
In summary, Kamala’s path to nomination will be an uphill battle, unless she works behind scene with help of few confidants and locks in as much support as she can and also raise more money than any other candidate.
