The Harvard South Asian Association (SAA) has named internationally acclaimed chef Vikas Khanna as its Person of the Year 2025.
Khanna, a Michelin-starred chef, restaurateur, author, and television personality, was honored at an awards ceremony on April 11 at Harvard University. The association cited his dedication to excellence, innovation in cuisine, and cultural storytelling through food as reasons for the selection.

“We are deeply honored and proud to announce Chef Vikas Khanna as Harvard SAA’s 2025 Person of the Year. It is a privilege to welcome someone who represents the very best of South Asian excellence — whose work reminds us that food is not just nourishment, but storytelling, community, and love,” the Association said.
Born in Amritsar, Khanna’s journey from a small-town kitchen to the fine-dining landscape of New York City has inspired millions. His flagship restaurant, Bungalow, is celebrated for its refined Indian dishes. “No Indian comes to New York without trying to score a table at Bungalow — a restaurant that has quickly become a cultural landmark and one of the most celebrated South Asian dining experiences in the country," the Association said.
Commenting on the honor, Khanna said, “I’m truly honored and humbled by this recognition. Indian cuisine and hospitality have come such a long way, and I’m grateful to play a small part in celebrating its richness and heritage. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey.”
In addition to his culinary achievements, Khanna has authored over 30 books and is a household name in India as a judge on MasterChef India. He is also known for his philanthropic efforts and storytelling through documentaries and short films.
The Harvard SAA award celebrates impactful South Asian leaders whose work inspires communities worldwide. For Khanna, this recognition adds another chapter to an already remarkable career built on passion, perseverance, and pride in his roots.
