High Commissioner celebrates Diwali with Governor-General of Australia

Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay joined the Diwali celebration hosted by Governor-General Sam Mostyn at Government House, Canberra, with support from the Hindu Council of Australia on Oct. 28. This event emphasized the importance of multiculturalism in Australia, showcasing the country's lively and positive spirit.
During the celebration, the Governor-General lit the first diya for Deepavali. This act represents the festival's messages of light overcoming darkness and good triumphing over evil.
Baglay became the High Commissioner of India to Australia in January 2024. He previously worked in the Prime Minister’s Office, served as the Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, and handled India’s relations with neighboring countries, Europe, and global organizations.
His overseas postings include Ukraine, Russia, the UK, Nepal, and Pakistan (as Deputy High Commissioner). During his first posting, he learned Ukrainian and is fluent in Russian and several regional languages.

The Indian diaspora plays a crucial role in Australia’s multicultural narrative, embodying diverse aspects of faith, culture, language, family, and friendship.
The Hindu Council of Australia is also organizing a formal Deepavali dinner for community leaders, dignitaries from ruling and opposition parties, and Consul Generals from various countries.
The event will take place at Waterview in Bicentennial Park, located on Bicentennial Drive in Sydney Olympic Park, on Oct. 30, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
This celebration provides an opportunity for community leaders and members to connect and engage in community work.
