Highlighting authoritarianism to educate is the gameplan of IOCUSA / Special arrangement

Sending a delegation of Indian Americans for campaigning purposes for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls starting on Apr. 19, phone banks in Hindi and other regional languages and sending text messages across India are some of the strategies that will be adopted by the Indian Overseas Congress of the United States of America (IOCUSA) to highlight the “authoritarian” rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a view to educating the masses.

In a press release outlining the issues that will be raised during the process, the IOCUSA has laid out a number of domestic issues, and China, so as to galvanize the voters before polls which has been billed by the organization as the “mother” of all Lok Sabha elections. These issues would include implementing the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and NRC (National Register of Citizens) prior to the polls; “selling” India abroad as a modern and rising economic power while implementing radical Hindu nationalism at home as well as polarizing the community and inciting communal violence.

At a time when there has been a lot of noise on election bonds, the IOCUSA will highlight the use of independent organizations like the CBI, ED, and IT to raid and extort money through electoral bonds; the issue of unemployment;” bragging about respecting women” but failing to visit Manipur where women were gang raped; breaching promises to farmers on doubling income and MSP.

The List of campaign issues posted by the IOCUSA also includes violations in the Model Code of Conduct by using state machinery (air force helicopter) to attend election rally in Andhra Pradesh; refusing to allow opposition or civil society to examine electronic voting machines to see if they were tamper proof and downgrading the independence of the Election Commission by changing the constitution of the body by removing the nominee by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

On foreign policy, the IOCUSA has said that it would bring to attention the Modi dispensation “Risking National security and territorial integrity on border issues by keeping silent on Chinese appropriations of territory."
