Suman Chakraborty, a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Royal Society of Chemistry, has been awarded the 2026 The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Award in engineering and computer sciences by UNESCO.

An alumnus of Jadavpur University in Kolkata and the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, Chakraborty has made significant contributions to scientific research and innovation. He is a visiting professor at Stanford University through the Indo-US Fellowship and has been an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in Germany.

Chakraborty is currently serving as the institute chair professor in the Mechanical Engineering department of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP).

His research has led to numerous affordable and innovative diagnostic solutions for a range of medical challenges, including anemia, cancer, COVID-19, and tuberculosis.

Among his notable innovations are Oroscreen, a torch-like imaging device for the early detection of oral cancer, and Covirap, a rapid COVID-19 detection test kit. The Covirap test kit has received a U.S. patent for its rapid nucleic acid testing technology, which uses DNA and RNA samples for quick and accurate results.

The TWAS Award honors scientists from developing countries for excellence in science and technology. Recipients receive a medal, a diploma, a cash prize, and the opportunity to present their work at the TWAS General Meeting.
