Hindu American Foundation highlights Hindu inclusivity of LGBTQ identities
The move aims to inspire nuanced, compassionate, and spiritually grounded perspectives, moving beyond contemporary political polarization.

On the occasion of Pride Month, the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has released an updated brief on LGBTQ rights, highlighting their inclusion in ancient Hindu texts.
The brief highlights that Hindu medical texts have long approached gender and sexuality with complexity treating gender as an attribute distinct yet overlapping with sex.

According to it, human beings are categorized into three main types of gendered innate traits: feminine, masculine, and third-natured (Tṛtīya-prakṛti in Sanskrit). The third category is further subdivided into seven general types and over 40 specific categories based on combinations of biological sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical capability, and sexual interests.
HAF, which has been vocal about LGBTQ rights since 2015, published its initial position paper to support LGBTQ rights grounded in timeless spiritual principles.
The recent updated brief reflects current understandings and reaffirms HAF’s commitment to fostering acceptance and understanding within the Hindu community and beyond.
"The decision to take a public stand was rooted in our principles, and we continue to support the rights of LGBTQ people as part of our timeless spiritual values," HAF said in a statement.
