The Hindu American Foundation (HAF), a non-profit advocacy organization for the Hindu American community, has joined The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of over 240 national organizations dedicated to promoting and protecting civil and human rights in the United States.

As part of its Hate Crimes Task Force, which includes civil rights, community, religious, and educational groups working together to address and prevent hate crimes, the Foundation and 32 other organizations wrote a letter in support of the bipartisan bill called the Improving Reporting to Prevent Hate Act (IRPHA).

This bipartisan bill, introduced on March.13, aims to enhance hate crime reporting and data collection, which is crucial for effectively countering bias-motivated crimes.

For over 30 years, the FBI’s Hate Crime Statistics Act (HCSA) has provided the most comprehensive national snapshot of hate violence in America. Unfortunately, reporting hate crime data to the FBI is voluntary, resulting in incomplete and inconsistent data from federal, state, local, and tribal police agencies, the coalition stated in the letter.

The Improving Reporting to Prevent Hate Act (IRPHA) will mandate that local governments with populations over 100,000 report credible hate crime data to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program to be eligible for federal funding under the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. Additionally, agencies in these jurisdictions that conduct community hate crime public education and awareness initiatives would also qualify for this federal funding.

“Hate crimes are on the rise, yet many go unreported due to flawed data collection. It's time for change. HAF has joined forces with @civilrightsorg to push for the #IRPHA bill, a crucial step in ensuring accurate hate crime reporting. Congress, the time to act is NOW. Lives are at stake,” HAF said in a post on X.

The Leadership Conference includes a score of other organizations including the Sikh Coalition, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Center for Security, Race and Rights, and others.
