Hindus for Human Rights will present the 2024 Swami Agnivesh Memorial Awards during their Celebration of Hope Gala on Dec. 7 recognizing individuals and organizations whose work exemplifies justice, equality, and compassion, breaking barriers of faith, caste, and community.
Among this year’s honorees Deepa Iyer, a strategist, lawyer, and author, will also be honored for her efforts in building solidarity movements. As Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Building Movement Project, Iyer has advanced justice through training programs, workshops, and her podcast, Solidarity Is This.
Her books, We Too Sing America and Social Change Now, provide practical guidance for pursuing social justice, while her children’s book, We Are The Builders!, encourages young readers to embrace inclusivity and resilience.
Zara Choudhary, a renowned writer, producer, and educator. Her memoir, The Lucky Ones, explores the struggles of a multigenerational Muslim family navigating the aftermath of India’s Partition and modern-day pogroms. Through her work, Choudhary brings attention to resilience and the rebellion of women fighting for recognition, emphasizing the power of storytelling to inspire activism and change.
The Sikh Coalition, the largest Sikh civil rights organization in the United States, will receive recognition for its advocacy for religious freedom and community protection. Founded in the aftermath of 9/11, the coalition has been instrumental in countering discrimination and promoting interfaith harmony.Harman Singh will represent the organization.
The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF), the oldest Sikh civil rights organization in the United States, will also be honored. Through education, advocacy, and outreach, the organization continues to empower Sikh Americans and advance justice. Kiran Kaur Gill, will represent the organization at the awards ceremony.
Satya Dharam Samvad, a coalition of Hindu spiritual leaders, will be recognized for its work in promoting unity and nonviolence. Its recent Dharam Sansad brought together over 100 leaders to reject the politicization of Hinduism and affirm the essence of Sanatan Dharma. The coalition will be represented by Swami Raghvendra, Swami Korneshwar, Swami Sandeepanandagiri, and Sadhvi Madhuri.
The awards are named after Indian social activist Swami Agnivesh, who dedicated his life to dismantling barriers of caste and faith in the pursuit of justice. “Through these awards, we celebrate not only the honorees but also the values that Swami Agnivesh stood for—justice, compassion, and unity,” the organization said.
