The International cricket council (ICC) has announced record-breaking prize money for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, setting a historic precedent for the tournament.

The winning team of the 20-team tournament will receive a minimum of $2.45 million, the highest prize money ever in the competition’s history. The runners-up will be awarded $1.28 million, while the semi-finalists will take home $787,500 each from a total prize pool of $11.25 million.

The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to conclude on June 29 at Kensington Oval in Barbados,  commenced on June 1.

Teams that do not advance past the Super 8s will earn $382,500 each, while those finishing in the ninth to twelfth positions will receive $247,500 each, ICC said in an official statement. Teams placed from thirteenth to twentieth will get $225,000 each.

In addition to the base prize money, every team will receive an extra $31,154 for each match they win, excluding the semi-finals and the final.

The tournament, spanning 28 days and featuring 55 matches across nine venues in the West Indies and USA, is set to be the largest ICC T20 World Cup ever. The format includes 40 first-round matches, followed by the Super 8s, with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana.

ICC chief executive, Geoff Allardice, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This event is historic in so many ways, so it is fitting that the prize money for players reflects that. Hundreds of millions of fans around the world will be entertained by the players in what we’re hoping to be an Out of This World event.”
