The ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2023 nominations were announced, with three Indian players among the four in contention.

Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami were the Indians alongside Daryl Mitchell from New Zealand in the fray.

According to ICC, Gill displayed an impressive performance that would make 2023 his “coming-of-age year” in international cricket. His best results were in the One-Day International (ODI) format, where he finished the year with 1584 runs at an average of 63.36.

It was the fifth-highest total of runs scored in one year in one-day internationals (ODIs) by an Indian, only topped by the sums scored by Sourav Ganguly (1999), Rahul Dravid (1999), and Sachin Tendulkar (1996, 1998). Alongside captain Rohit Sharma, Gill was a rock at the top of the Indian order with five hundreds and a strike rate of over 100.
Additionally, Gill became the youngest double centurion in the year, slamming a terrific 208 against New Zealand.

Shami, on the other hand, elevated India's performance at the Cricket World Cup. The pacer made a quick return to the starting XI after missing the first few games of the competition and finished as the tournament's top wicket-taker with 24 scalps at an incredible average of 10.7.

In the seven matches he participated in during the competition, Shami claimed three five-wicket hauls and one four-wicket haul. With 18 games played, the seamer's total of 55 wickets set the record for India's top wicket-taker at Men's Cricket World Cups.

Following up on his 2022 comeback, Kohli had an incredible 2023 in which he was at the top of his game in ODIs. He was named the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 Player of the Tournament.

The number three player for India crushed at least a half-century in nine of his 11 World Cup innings. He finished with an incredible 765 runs, surpassing the record established by Sachin Tendulkar in 2003 to become the highest individual scorer at a men's cricket World Cup.
