The International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad honored alumni during the Institute’s Silver Jubilee celebrations recently.

Eight alumni were recognized for their exceptional service, including Indian-Americans Subhash Karri and Manohar Paluri, who received the Outstanding Service Award.

Subhash Karri, a founding batch alumnus of 1998, has been instrumental in creating and managing the Alumni Fund, which consistently raises contributions for the Institute. His efforts, especially in the Bay Area, have strengthened alumni ties and fostered a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem, the institute said

“As the founding batch, the faculty has a special place for us because when we joined IIITH, it had no name. But we knew something big was going to happen,” remarked Karri, who helped raise USD 50,000 through the Google Give program last year.

Manohar Paluri, a 2002 alumnus and vice president at Meta (AI), has been pivotal in promoting IIIT Hyderabad’s cutting-edge research globally. His work in computer vision and his philanthropic commitment through the Paluri Foundation have significantly contributed to the Institute’s academic and research growth.

Acknowledging the significance of the institute in his career, Paluri said, “IIITH asked me what I wanted to become, rather than telling me what success is. The values I learned here have been crucial to my career.”

Dr. Raj Reddy, the institute’s first chairman, highlighted the importance of alumni in shaping the institute’s future. “As alumni for life, our alumni are the end owners of the Institute. What sets these alumni apart is their investment in the ideas and ideals of the institution that moulded them,” Dr. Reddy remarked.

IIITH’s Governing Council chairman, Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, in his address, emphasized the alumni's role in nurturing the institute. “It is the obligation of the alumni to give back and help it become the top-ranked institute in the country,” he said, stressing the institute's lack of financial support from government or industry.

Prof. P J Narayanan, director of IIITH, shared his vision for the awards: “Our alumni serve as our ambassadors, and their achievements reflect on the institute. It is our desire to connect exceptional achievers with current students and fellow alumni.”
