Scholars at the academy will lead groundbreaking research in strategically significant areas for both countries.

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT Madras) and Australia’s Deakin University have partnered to establish a  research academy. The announcement came during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet in Chennai in the presence of Australian Consul General Sarah Kirlew.

The ‘IIT Madras Deakin University Research Academy’ is aimed at fostering collaborative global research projects, providing joint supervision, and offering meritorious scholarships. It is set to cultivate around 200 highly talented graduate research scholars from SAARC and ASEAN countries and guide them to tackle and resolve urgent global challenges.

According to a release, the scholars will lead groundbreaking research in strategically significant areas for both India and Australia such as clean energy, critical technologies, sustainability, climate change, and healthcare technologies, among others. The outcomes of their research endeavors will contribute to the socio-economic goals of both nations on a global scale.

The research academy will provide a four-year joint Ph.D. program, which will offer international doctoral training opportunities for early-stage researchers.
The program will also include scholarships, supervision by faculty from both institutions, and access to cutting-edge research facilities. Scholars will also engage in an open innovation ecosystem and benefit from collaboration opportunities with industry leaders from both India and Australia.

"IIT Madras envisions integration of innovation, collaboration, and responsible practices to create a sustainable future for the generations to come,” said V Kamakoti, IIT-Madras director.

“Through this academy, IIT Madras will partner with Deakin to build upon its technical and research expertise and environmental stewardship and social responsibility action plan to emerge as a leader for sustainability teaching and research in the global south. I look forward to the far-reaching positive outcomes that this academy is sure to generate,” he added.

In 2024, the program will award 30 scholarships to scholars from both IIT Madras and Deakin University, underscoring the commitment to fostering global collaboration. Additionally, provisions for post-doctoral fellows and academics to engage in reciprocal visits between the institutes are expected to enhance knowledge sharing and collaborative efforts.

Iain Martin, vice-chancellor of Deakin University, said, "With the launch of the IIT Madras Deakin University Research Academy, we shall further strengthen the synergy already achieved between our institutions by continuously exceeding excellence through collaborative research in areas of strategic importance.”

“The academy will help leverage Deakin's strengths of working with industry for optimum research and development in critical areas of smart and sustainable technologies,” he added.
