IIT-Madras professor elected to US Academy of Engineering
The professor has been elected for his contributions to cluster chemistry and the discovery and implementation of affordable drinking water solutions.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) professor Thalappil Pradeep has been elected to the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE).
Pradeep has become the 23rd foreign member from India to be elected for the position will be formally inducted during the NAE's annual meeting on September 29, 2024.

As per the IIT-Madras statement, the professor has been elected for his contributions to cluster chemistry and the discovery and implementation of affordable drinking water solutions. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer, the statement added.
Accepting the honor, Pradeep, faculty of department of chemistry of IIT Madras, said, "I am humbled by this recognition, which is a result of the hard work of my team. I could reach this far only because of the tremendous support my institution and my nation. This fellowship once again reaffirms my belief in the interdisciplinary nature of science."
The professor is a pioneer in nanotechnology applications for clear water. He contributed to the development of 'water-positive' materials to remove arsenic, uranium and several other toxic contaminants from water, the technology has been approved for national implementation. He is expanding the reach of these technologies to other countries.
Pradeep completed his B. Sc and M. Sc from Calicut University and a PhD in chemical physics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He was a post-doctoral fellow of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley. He has held visiting positions at Purdue University, Leiden University (Netherlands), EPFL (Switzerland), Institute of Chemistry (Taiwan), Pohang University of Science and Technology (South Korea) and the University of Hyogo (Japan).
Pradeep has 550 papers and over 100 patents to his credit. His contributions are recognised both nationally and internationally. He has received the Padma Shri and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in India and coveted international recognitions such as the Eni Award, VinFuture Prize and Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Price for Water.
