Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has termed the 2023 attack on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco as a "very serious matter," urging for accountability from the United States.

Speaking at a press conference in Washington DC on Jan. 22, Jaishankar said, “The arson attack on our consulate in San Francisco is a very, very serious matter, and it is something for which we expect accountability. We would like to see that people who did it are held responsible.”

The attack, which occurred on March.19,2023, involved a group of assailants who attempted to set the consulate building on fire using inflammable substances early in the morning. Later that day, the attackers returned, vandalizing public property and targeting consulate officials. Videos circulated on social media showed pro-Khalistani protestors outside the consulate, shouting slogans and heckling diplomatic staff.

This incident was followed by another attempt in July 2023, when Khalistani extremists allegedly tried to set the consulate on fire. Both attacks prompted investigations by local authorities, including the San Francisco Police Department, special diplomatic security personnel, and federal agencies.

Jaishankar’s remarks came during his visit to Washington DC, where he represented Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. During the visit, Jaishankar held bilateral meetings with key U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. He also participated in the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting alongside his Australian and Japanese counterparts.
