India clinches top spot in World Test Championship Standings

With five victories, two defeats, and one tie, India has 62 points in eight matches

India has moved to the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings before the Dharamsala Test against England.

The change in rankings come after Australia defeated New Zealand in Wellington. With the setback, New Zealand's points percentage fell from 75 to 60, making India who have a PCT of 64.58 the table toppers.

Spinner Nathan Lyon grabbed six for 65 as Australia dismissed the Kiwis for 196 before lunch on the fourth day of the first test at Wellington's Basin Reserve on Mar.3 winning by 172 runs and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

India, which thrashed England by five wickets in the fourth Test in Ranchi to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the five-match series, surpassed the Kiwis with a points percentage of 64.58. 

The team has 62 points from 8 matches, including five victories, two losses, and one draw, whereas the Black Caps have 36 points from five matches (three wins, two losses) and a point percentage of 60.00.

Australia, meanwhile, cemented their No.3 ranking, scoring 12 critical points with the win in Wellington, bringing their  points percentage from 55 to 59.09. The 2023 champions can pass New Zealand and move up to second place if they win the second and final Test of the present series.

Australia may potentially rise to the top spot if England defeats India in the Dharamsala Test, which begins on March 7. The two teams will next meet in Christchurch, with the final Test due to begin on March 8.
