India strongly condemned a security breach during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to London, calling it a “misuse of democratic freedoms” by separatist elements.

The incident occurred on March. 5 outside Chatham House, home to the Royal Institute of International Affairs, where pro-Khalistani protesters attempted to break barricades and shouted anti-India slogans as Jaishankar exited the venue.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed its displeasure, emphasizing the need for host governments to uphold diplomatic obligations. “We have seen the footage of a breach of security during the visit of the external affairs minister to the UK,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. “We condemn the provocative activities of this small group of separatists and extremists.”

Videos circulating on social media showed a small group of protesters holding yellow Khalistani flags and raising anti-India slogans. As Jaishankar was about to leave, a man was seen attempting to break through the police cordon and block the minister’s motorcade before being swiftly removed by officers.

“This is a deplorable misuse of democratic freedoms by such elements. We expect the host government in such cases to fully live up to their diplomatic obligations,” Jaiswal added.

This is not the first instance of a security breach by Khalistani elements in the UK. In March 2023, protesters pulled down the Indian national flag at the High Commission in London, prompting a strong response from New Delhi.
