India defeat South Africa in 4-nation hockey tournament

The Indian men’s hockey team won with a 3-0 victory over hosts South Africa in Cape Town recently. This match was a part of the Four-Nation tournament between France, Netherlands and South Africa.

The line-up change and Hundal’s debut

In a strategic move, the team underwent a line-up change for their match against South Africa. Krishan Pathak took over the goalkeeper position from Pawan Malik, and forwards Akashdeep Singh and Gurjant Singh were replaced by Abhishek and Araijeet Singh Hundal. This game was Hundal’s first startling line-up appearance.

The final line-up included captain Harmanpreet Singh, goalkeeper Krishan Pathak, Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Sumit, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Hardik Singh, Shamsher Singh, Mandeep Singh, Abhishek, and Araijeet Singh Hundal.

The goal scorers

The Captain (2’), Abhishek (13’), and Sumit (30’) were the goal scorers of the game.  Harmanpreet’s penalty corner drag flick in the second minute set the pace and gained India’s first goal. The second goal came from Abhishek in the 13th minute.

Lastly, Sumit scored the final field goal in the 30th minute, leaving the opponents with three goals to chase. In the end, India’s defence proved to be strong, thwarting South Africa’s attempts and securing a 3-0 straight win.

The Indian hockey team will play against Netherlands, who are world No. 1, in their final game of the series on January 28.
