Haiti continues to grapple with severe gang violence and political turmoil following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021.

Haiti Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s leadership amid the power vacuum has also been facing challenges, leading to a stagnant political transition and ongoing instability.

India, which does not have an embassy in Haiti, is closely monitoring the situation through its mission in Santo Domingo. According to Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal’s update on Mar. 15, there are an estimated 75 to 90 Indians residing in Haiti.

Notably, about 60 of them have registered with Indian authorities, indicating their readiness to return to India if circumstances necessitate it.

The situation in the gang-ravaged capital of Haiti has gone from worrying to “extremely alarming” as conditions in Port-au-Prince continue to worsen. There is growing hunger and serious shortages in hospitals to treat gunshot victims, as per Ulrika Richardson, UN Humanitarian Coordinator.

More than 2,500 people have been killed, kidnapped or injured in Haiti as per a UN report. It further mentioned that sexual violence is rampant, with the use of torture and “collective rape” against women.
