India needs to invest more in sports, says retired tennis player Vijay Amritraj

“You have to invest so much into it, with no guarantees, no assurances, no ROI (Return of Investment)—hopefully, one or two will make it,” he added.

Reflecting on India’s sporting progress, Amritraj acknowledged significant improvements. “It’s gotten a lot better since the time I played 40 years ago,” he said. / Courtesy Photo

Vijay Amritraj, a retired professional tennis player, Indian sports commentator, and UN Goodwill Ambassador, shared his insights with New India Abroad on increasing investment in sports and India's athletic development. Amritraj was speaking on the sidelines of the Indiaspora Forum For Good 2025 in Abu Dhabi.

Chennai-born Amritraj emphasized the difficulty of attracting investment in sports due to the uncertainty of returns. “Because it’s very hard to foresee an ROI (Return of Investment),” he explained.
