India slips to 85th place in Passport Index; US ranks sixth
Countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain have secured the top positions.

India has slipped down to 85th position on the Henley Passport Index for 2024, compared to the previous year's 84th position.
The slip comes despite the country's passport holders being able to travel visa-free to 62 countries, such as Bhutan, Bolivia, Cambodia, El Salvador, Fiji,
Gabon, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Jamaica, Jordon, and Maldives, as compared to only sixty countries in 2023.
India had stepped up to the 81st ranking in 2018 after which there has been a consistent decline.
France tops the list providing its citizens with access to 194 visa-free destinations. Meanwhile, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain have also secured the top positions. The USA, Canada, Czechia, and Poland have been placed in the sixth position, providing citizens with visa-free access to 189 countries.
Meanwhile, the United Kingdom, Austria, Denmark, and Luxembourg have secured the third rank in the Henley Passport Index 2024, allowing their citizens to travel visa-free to 192 destinations. Maldives has gained the 58th position, with access to 96 visa-free destinations. China has bagged the 64th ranking again after 2022.
The Henley Passport Index compares the visa-free access of 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations. The data spanning 19 years is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), an international trade body.
The index, updated monthly, is considered the standard reference tool for global citizens and sovereign states when assessing where a passport ranks on the global mobility spectrum.
