India won their first match in the Super4 stage of Asia Cup 2023, against Pakistan by a massive 228 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 11. With the win, the Men in Blue not only took the lead on the points table but also registered their highest ever win by margin over arch-rivals Pakistan.

A match which got completed in the course of two days began with a strong start for Team India by openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who put up a 121-run stand before losing wickets in quick succession. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul took to the crease before rain caused the match to go into the reserve day.

Beginning the next day from 147/2 (24.1 overs), Kohli and Rahul put up a fantastic innings scoring 122* off 94 and 111* off 106 respectively and bringing India’s total to a massive 356. Kohli’s century led him to break a long-standing Sachin Tendulkar record.

Kohli took 267 innings to reach 13,000 ODI runs while Tendulkar took 321 innings to get to the mark, making the former the fastest batsman to reach the milestone. Ricky Ponting (341), Kumar Sangakkara (363) and Sanath Jayasuriya (416) are the only others who have scored 13,000 ODI runs.

And with this century, Kohli is now only two centuries away from matching Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI hundreds. Rahul, meanwhile, made a big impression with a century in his comeback match after an injury.

There was no way for Pakistan to regain control of the game in their second innings after Indian pacers struck as early as the fourth over, when Jasprit Bumrah sent Imam Ul Haq to the stands. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav took advantage of Bumrah's early success and finished with five wickets to his name in just eight overs. In the end, Pakistan was bowled out for a mere 128, losing by a record-breaking 228 runs to the Men in Blue.

India will next play Sri Lanka other tomorrow (September 12) at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.  Currently, India and Pakistan have two points each. While India and Sri Lanka have played only one game in Super4, Pakistan have played two.
