India will host the next international summit on artificial intelligence after co-hosting with France in Paris on Feb.10 and 11, President Emmanuel Macron's office said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier told attendees in Paris's opulent Grand Palais that India would "be happy to host the next AI summit" on its territory.
In his speech, Modi addressed both the transformative potential and the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of humanity. “AI is already re-shaping our polity, our economy, our security, and even our society. AI is writing the code for humanity in this century,” Modi remarked, emphasizing AI's significant impact across various sectors.
While Modi acknowledged AI's unprecedented development, he stressed the necessity for global cooperation in creating governance standards that uphold shared values. “There is a need for collective global efforts to establish governance and standards, that uphold our shared values, address risks, and build trust,” he said.
AI's impact on employment was also a significant point of discussion. Modi highlighted, “Loss of jobs is AI’s most feared disruption. But, history has shown that work does not disappear due to technology. Its nature changes and new types of jobs are created.” He called for investments in skilling and re-skilling individuals to prepare them for an AI-driven future.
On sustainability, Modi underscored the importance of AI's green energy needs. He pointed out, “This will require green power to fuel its future,” and noted India and France's ongoing collaboration in initiatives like the International Solar Alliance to promote clean energy. He also mentioned the need for AI models to be efficient and sustainable, echoing the energy efficiency of the human brain.
Reflecting on India's role in AI development, Modi outlined the country's achievements in building a Digital Public Infrastructure for 1.4 billion people, providing affordable access to essential technologies. He highlighted India's National AI Mission, its strides in developing AI applications for public good, and the nation's leadership in AI adoption and data privacy solutions.
“We are developing AI applications for public good. We have one of the world’s largest AI talent pools. India is building its own Large Language Model considering our diversity,” he stated, reiterating India's commitment to global collaboration in AI development.
The Prime Minister emphasized the responsibility of humanity in shaping the future of AI. “Some people worry about machines becoming superior in intelligence to humans. But, no one holds the key to our collective future and shared destiny other than us humans,” Modi said, calling for a responsible approach to the rapidly advancing technology.
