India downplays the impact of new US 25 percent tariffs on steel imports, citing low export volumes. Steel Secretary Poundrik says exports are under 100,000 tonnes, negligible compared to India's 145 million tonne production. However, trade data shows India imports more steel from the US than it exports, potentially giving India leverage.
Poundrik asserted that the tariffs would not significantly affect the domestic industry, noting that exports to the US amounted to less than 100,000 metric tonnes. "To US, we export less than 100,000 metric tonnes," Poundrik told reporters in New Delhi, emphasizing the strength of the domestic market.
