India-US collaboration to develop low-cost Direct-to-Mobile devices

The consumer trials are expected to launch in early 2025, positioning India as a leader in D2M broadcast technology.

Bangalore-based wireless communication semiconductors company, Saankhya Labs, a subsidiary of Tejas Networks, in collaboration with DeepTech start-up Free Stream Technologies, and Maryland-based media company Sinclair Inc., is set to develop affordable Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) devices, with consumer trials set to begin in India.

Powered by Saankhya’s Pruthvi-3 ATSC 3.0 chipsets, these devices mark a significant step in India's semiconductor journey and its push for technological self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The D2M technology, which enables multimedia delivery and data broadcasting directly to mobile phones, has undergone extensive trials over the past two years in Bengaluru, Delhi, and the U.S.

Now, the partnership will conduct trials on various D2M-enabled devices, including smartphones, USB dongles, and low-cost feature phones. These devices are expected to work with mobile system-on-chip platforms from global suppliers.

Parag Naik, founder and CEO of Saankhya Labs said, “As India’s foremost fabless chip company, Saankhya is delighted to see this path breaking D2M technology getting one step closer to launch. As an end-to-end originator and supplier of D2M technology – chipsets, radios, software and network infrastructure, we are fully equipped to rapidly validate end-to-end performance and gear up for launch.”

Chris Ripley, CEO of Sinclair, emphasized the importance of low-cost feature phones in driving demand in India, a market with over 300 million feature phone users. Ripley expects the D2M technology to provide affordable broadcast-enabled phones by 2025, benefitting both the Indian and global markets. “I firmly believe that low-cost feature phones will be the biggest driver for domestic demand in India,” Ripley remarked.
