Indian Defense Secretary Giridhar Aramane emphasized the importance of India and the United States as key stakeholders in the Indo-Pacific region during his address at the second edition of the India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) summit on February 21 in New Delhi.

Aramane underscored the robust defense partnership between India and the United States, emphasizing its foundation of mutual respect and strategic alignment in navigating the complex dynamics of the region.

“Today, we are witnessing a pivotal moment in the history of the Indo-Pacific region. The Indo-Pacific, with its vast expanse of oceans and strategic waterways, stands as the crossroad of global commerce, geopolitics, and security. In navigating the complex dynamics of this region, India and the United

States find themselves as key stakeholders, bound by shared values and common interests,” the Defence Secretary said.

He highlighted initiatives such as the Initiatives on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), launched jointly by Prime Minister Modi and President Joe

Biden in 2022. “A pivotal aspect of our burgeoning relationship is the iCET that aims to establish ‘Innovation Bridges’ across key sectors, including defence, through expos, hackathons, and pitching sessions.” he said.

Further the Defence Secretary highlighted the introduction of Joint IMPACT Challenges as a distinctive initiative aimed at advancing collaborative efforts in defense and aerospace co-development and co-production initiatives between India and the US.

On the bilateral partnership in the aerospace and defence sectors, Aramane said, “Our bilateral relationship is flourishing, with India increasingly turning to the United States for cutting-edge equipment and technology. The United States, in turn, sees India as a key partner in its Indo-Pacific strategy, leveraging India’s growing defence capabilities.”

Aramane urged India-US industry representatives and other stakeholders at the Summit to deepen the strategic bilateral partnership further and maximize the potential of cooperation between the two countries. “By leveraging our respective strengths and capabilities, India and the United States can play a pivotal role in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific, promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region,” he said.

The two-day INDUS-X Summit 2024 aimed to facilitate collective advancement for defense industries across borders. It focused on aligning technological capabilities for startups and MSMEs and engaged in discussions and bilateral dialogues on various key objectives within the INDUS-X framework. The summit also aimed to propose relevant outcomes and strategies to further advance the INDUS-X initiative.

It was attended by Richard Verma, former US ambassador to India and currently deputy secretary for management and resources, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti,  Amb. Atul Keshap, President, US-India Business Council and other key stakeholders from the defense industry of both sides.
