India, US sign MoU to support net zero carbon emissions
The MoU establishes a platform for Indian Railways to communicate and exchange the latest developments and knowledge within the railway sector.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and the United States for International Development/India (USAID/India).
The MoU was signed on June 14, 2023, with the aim of supporting Indian Railways in achieving the mission of Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2030. It establishes a platform for the railways to communicate and exchange the latest developments and knowledge within the railway sector.
The agreement enables collaboration on utility modernization, advanced energy solutions and systems, regional energy and market integration, private sector participation and engagement, as well as training, seminars, and workshops. The focus will be on specific technology areas and facilitating interactions for knowledge sharing between India and the US.
The two sides will work towards developing an Energy Efficiency Policy and Action Plan for Indian Railway buildings and supporting the Indian Railways in promoting e-mobility by jointly hosting events, conferences, and capacity-building programs in the identified areas.
The MoU is also expected to assist the Indian Railways in diminishing its reliance on imported fuels like diesel and coal. The implementation of Renewable Energy (RE) plants is poised to advance RE technology within the country, contributing to the growth of the local ecosystem and providing impetus to local product development.
As per the terms of the agreement, both participants have the right to submit a written request for the revision, modification, or amendment of any part of the MoU. Upon approval by the participants, any such revision, modification, or amendment will be incorporated into the updated MoU and will become effective on a date mutually determined.
According to a release, the MoU takes effect from the date of signing and is anticipated to remain in force for five years or until the conclusion of the effective period of the South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP), whichever is shorter.
