India “very concerned” with situation in West Asia
Jaishankar emphasized on descalation of tensions especially because the region was home to a large population of Indians
Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that New Delhi was very concerned about the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel and urged them to “calm down.”
Interacting with reporters in Bengaluru, on the sidelines of his book launch in Kannada, Jaishankar said that the area is crucial not only for shipping and trade but also because it is home to over 10 million Indians.
“We have been telling them not to allow this (the situation) to escalate and that this is a very crucial region for the global economy,” he told reporters adding that he has spoken to both his Israeli and Iranian counterparts.
“This is an enormously sensitive region. So we are very concerned when there is this kind of escalation and hostilities. So our effort has been to tell both of them to calm down. So yesterday, I made a phone call to both, not only Iran (Foreign Minister) Hossein Amir-Abdollahian but also I called up my Israeli counterpart (Israel Katz),” he added.
Talks with Iran
Iranian Foreign Minister (FM) Hossein Amirabdollahian and Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar engaged in discussions regarding the safety of the 17 Indian crew members on a cargo vessel that was seized by the Iranian military near the Strait of Hormuz on Apr.13.
Amirabdollahian affirmed Iran’s commitment to resolving the issue concerning the seized ship and assured Jaishankar that arrangements would be made for Indian government representatives to meet with the crew members.
Talks with Israel
Jaishankar also engaged in a dialogue with Israel’s Foreign Minister, Katz, sharing concerns about recent developments and discussing the broader regional situation. Both parties agreed to maintain communication and collaboration in addressing mutual concerns.
