India wins World Cup opener
The team chased down a low-scoring total of 200 runs with six wickets to spare
India began their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign with a six-wicket win over Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) in Chennai on October 8.
Bowling first, the Men in blue restricted the Aussies to a low score of 199. Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets while Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav got 2 each. Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammad Siraj also took a wicket each.
While the bowlers performed well, the Indian top -order of Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer lost their wickets in a matter of just 12 balls, tipping the scales heavily in the favor of their opponents.
Virat Kohli gave the Indian innings some much needed momentum and was accompanied by KL Rahul. The two held their form and stitched together an impressive 165-runs to take India to the finish line.
Kohli was sent back to the pavillion by Josh Hazlewood at 85 while Rahul remained unbeaten at 97. A 11 run cameo by Hardik Pandya gave India the win in the 42nd over.
“Good feeling to come out on top, it was a good game to start the tournament. Our bowlers used the conditions perfectly, the spinners bowled in the nice areas and all in all, it was a great effort. Credit to Virat and KL on how they went about the chase,” skipper Sharma said after the win.
