OpenAI, the pioneering AI firm, has appointed Indian-American economist Dr. Aaron Chatterji as its first chief economist.
Chatterji, a distinguished professor of business and public policy at Duke University, will lead research on AI's economic impact and focus on how AI can drive economic growth and innovation globally, an official statement noted.
In his new position, Chatterji will provide insights on how AI-driven innovation can boost productivity and solve complex economic challenges. His work will also help guide policymakers, academics, and businesses in maximizing AI’s potential while addressing potential challenges.
Commenting on the role, Chatterji said, “My career has focused on studying how innovation and entrepreneurship shape our economy and society, and I am excited to apply my skills to support OpenAI’s mission. I look forward to contributing to research that helps inform how we transition to an AI-driven economy."
Larry Summers, OpenAI board member and former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, praised Chatterji’s appointment, noting, "Like electricity, AI holds the potential to revolutionize our economy by accelerating innovation and boosting productivity. Chatterji’s deep understanding of the dynamics that shape our economy and society will guide OpenAI’s mission to create AI tools that fuel growth and foster long-term prosperity."
Chatterji’s career includes serving as acting deputy director of the White House National Economic Council and as chief economist of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
