Indian American Jeremy Cooney wins third term in New York Senate
He is the first Asian to be elected to state office from upstate New York.

Indian-American Democrat Jeremy Cooney has secured re-election to represent New York’s 56th State Senate District winning 58 percent of the vote against Republican challenger Jim VanBrederode, a former Gates Police Department chief, in a competitive race highlighting issues of public safety and economic progress.
Cooney, first elected in 2020, will now serve his third term, a victory that affirms his continued support in the region encompassing Brighton, Gates, Greece, Henrietta, and parts of Rochester, including Charlotte and Maplewood.
A prominent figure in state politics, Cooney was appointed Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee in 2024, where he has since prioritized transportation and infrastructure initiatives, particularly for upstate New York.
In the upcoming term, Cooney has committed to focusing on issues of community affordability, public safety, and enhancing access to homeownership—an agenda aimed at improving quality of life for his constituents. His win reflects voter support for his campaign, which balances progressive reforms with pragmatic concerns around affordability and healthcare access.
Cooney’s reelection also strengthens Democratic representation in Monroe County, where he is an active member of the local Democratic Committee. His third term is expected to further bolster Rochester’s influence in Albany as he champions the community’s interests and values in state governance.

Minita Sanghvi, a Democrat, was running for New York's 44th State Senate District. Sanghvi, the Commissioner of Finance in Saratoga Springs and the city’s first openly gay and first woman of color to serve on the City Council, faced a tough race.
In a statement following her loss, Sanghvi expressed gratitude to her supporters. "The results last night were not what we hoped, by far," she said. "I will not give up hope that we can make progressive strides and I will not stop fighting for the community I call home."
Sanghvi's platform focused on environmental sustainability, advocating for clean energy, emission reductions, and renewable energy projects. Despite her loss, she remains committed to her causes, as she emphasized in her post-election statement.
